Action for ESOL
Statement from SAVTE:
The ability to speak and understand English is a fundamental tool which underpins the process of integration, employability and building a life in the UK.
The Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English (SAVTE) has been working for many years helping people in Sheffield learn English. We know from our experience just how crucial English language skills are to enable people to help support themselves and their families, to play a full part in their communities and to integrate into life in our city. Cuts in ESOL provision, which will hit the most disadvantaged hardest, will take away this lifeline.
The consequences of these cuts in expenditure will be longer-term problems and costs, as people find it harder to get work and they and their families need more support in terms of health and social care. It is essential these short-sighted cuts are reversed.
