NEWSNRC successful in Big Lottery Bid [June 2007]The Northern Refugee Centre's advice Service has been successful in a major lottery bid in partnership with South Yorkshire Citizens Advice Bureaux, to provide refugee advisers. The centres in Sharrow (Sheffield), Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham will each host specialist workers, whilst the NRC will provide specialist support and training, and will host a supervisor. The project, worth £475,000 over 3 years will aim to 'mainstream' refugee advice (not including asylum casework, separately funded by the legal aid scheme), and bring in refugees as volunteers into the centres. The project's resources for advisers will be made freely available for other's advising refugees. Sanctuary Information ProjectThe NRC supports this new project which is at the planning stage. The aim is to find ways of helping unrepresented asylum seekers in Sheffield with their asylum applications and appeals. Initially they are looking to run sessions with volunteers helping prepare country information for appeals and new applications. The SIF pages on our website are here. More Funding The NRC has just been awarded £10,000 in funding to carry on the work of the Women's Conversation Club in Gleadless which, added to the £10,000 funding secured for the City Centre Club will ensure that their activities are secure for at least the next 12 months NRC Works in partnership with Refugee Council on Advice (February 2007) The Refugee Council has agreed with the NRC to place a Refugee Council Project Worker to the Tuesday Advice Service Drop-In to increase the capacity of the service to help refugees and asylum seekers. They will join the NRC's own staff - 3 advisers, a screener and volunteers at the drop-in. The NRC also welcomes the Refugee Council's decision to place workers at the Rotherham and Doncaster Multi-agency drop-ins on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.
