The Northern Refugee Centre currently supports six Women's Conversation Clubs in Sheffield. Women’s Conversation Clubs provide opportunities to:
Women do not need to pre-register to attend a club; they can just turn up on the day. The Women’s Conversation Clubs are free and refreshments are provided. There is a free, on-site crèche at five of the six clubs. The Women's Conversation Clubs receive support from the Northern Refugee Centre and are organised in partnership with local organisations and agencies. The Women’s Conversation Clubs also bring great benefits to the local communities in which they are based. They offer women from the ‘host communities’ the opportunity to volunteer with and get to know local refugee and asylum seeker women. Women's Conversation Club volunteers:
• make a postive contribution to the local community
• receive training relevant to their volunteer role • develop new skills The Women’s Conversation Clubs aid the integration of refugees and asylum seekers in to the local communities by encouraging and involving volunteers from Sheffield in the running of the clubs. The volunteers signpost club-users in to local agencies and support structures, and encourage the women to engage in other community-based activities. The involvement of locally-based volunteers also helps to develop good relations and understanding between the ‘indigenous’ communities and refugees and asylum seekers by developing positive relationships within the group setting.
